What is allergy?
Allergy is a ‘hypersensitivity’ reaction, or exaggerated ‘sensitivity’ to substances that are normally tolerated. Such substances are known as allergens. Examples of common allergens include peanuts, house dustmites, grass pollen, cats and medicines.
These allergens trigger the production of a harmful antibody known as immunoglobulin E (IgE). In an allergic reaction, the interaction between the IgE and the allergen causes the release of inflammatory chemicals such as histamine and leukotrienes. In turn, these cause symptoms such as sneezes and itches, rashes, falls in blood pressure and airway narrowing, which leads to difficulty breathing. Sometimes symptoms are caused by other mechanisms where IgE is not involved.

gynecology doctors specialise in diseases of the female genital tract and women's health. This means diseases of the uterus (womb), fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix (opening of the womb), vagina, and vulva (external genital organs). A gynecologist also specializes in menstrual problems, contraception, sexuality, menopause, and infertility. Many gynecologists also provide prenatal care. Some gynecologists may perform primary care services depending on their experience and training.
In these days of managed care and HMOs many primary care providers (doctors or nurse practitioners in Internal Medicine, General Medicine, or Family Practice) are doing some basic gynecology and refer only to a gynecologist when they feel the condition is more appropriate for the specialist to handle.
Most women should go to a provider for routine annual pelvic exams. A gynecologist is probably more appropriate if there is a history of women's problems in the patient or her family, or if there is a condition which is not improving despite the primary care provider's best efforts. Another indication that a gynecologist may be preferred is if a woman always has a difficult or painful exam due to her size (large or small). A gynecologist may have better equipment available to assure her comfort.

Diabetes is a common condition, in which a person's blood sugar levels become too high. In Middle East in general most people become diabetic because of their life styles.
There are two major variants: type 1 and type 2.
Type 1 is sometimes referred to as ‘insulin-dependent’ diabetes, as it is characterised by the body's inability to produce insulin. Type 2 diabetes is the more common variant, characterised by what is known as insulin resistance, where the body does not effectively respond to the insulin produced.
Type 1 generally involves daily injections of insulin, while type 2 can be managed by taking tablets maintaining a healthy lifestyle
Diabetes is a condition that affects millions people all around the world. Neuropathy (nerve damage) is a long-term complication of diabetes, and often affects the lower leg, making it difficult to detect foot problems such as ulcers. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped hormonal gland that lies in the middle of the neck. It is present in everyone and its main role is to control the metabolism of the body.
Problems with the thyroid gland can occur due to an abnormality in the activity of the thyroid gland, such as the thyroid gland being either over or under active. The thyroid gland can also cause problems if it becomes enlarged in part (nodule) or in its entirety (goitre).
The symptoms of an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) are excessive tiredness, excessive weight gain or hair loss.
The symptoms of an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) include palpitations, excessive sweating, tremor and unexplained weight loss.
These symptoms can occur due to many other medical conditions and it is important that your Consultant performs a thyroid function test after examining you to confirm whether the thyroid gland hormone levels are within normal limits.
Thyroid nodules and goitres of the thyroid gland are common, especially in women, and a Consultant will perform an ultrasound scan and Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC needle biopsy) to determine the nature of the thyroid swelling. The majority of thyroid problems are corrected using medication.
A small number of thyroid nodules and goitres will require surgery if the biopsy or scan indicates a more serious pathology, or if the goitre or nodule is causing cosmetic or compressive symptoms which affect swallowing or breathing. Thyroid surgery is a complicated surgery, as the thyroid gland lies within the neck, surrounded by important blood vessels and nerves. At Swedish Specialist Hospital, our Dr Kamal Hadi specially trained and experienced in thyroid surgery.
Complications of thyroid surgery include poor cosmetic scarring, bleeding or haematoma in the neck – damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve which will cause hoarseness and low calcium (hypocalcaemia) due to damage to the adjacent nearby parathyroid glands.
